End of Day: More Media "Fairness"

The Washington Post today has page after page of prison abuse stories and photos complete with "affidavits" from "detainees" about how bad they were treated. Is this "news?" Not in any real sense. We know some guards went too far and they are being court-martialed. Beyond that, the ongoing extensive media coverage is nothing more than wallowing and U.S. bashing.

The Media Research Center monitored NBC and found that from April 29th through May 11th it ran 58 stories on U.S. abuse. Over the past year NBC aired only 5 stories on Saddam Hussein's mass graves! The Post put on page 21 today, with no pictures, the news that they have access to a video that shows Hussein's military chopping off fingers of prisoners, cutting out tongues of prisoners, beheading them and throwing one off a roof! But that's not "news" since it can't be blamed on Bush or Rumsfeld! Even liberal commentator Mort Kondracke sees what the danger is. He said today, "The American establishment, led by the media and politicians, is in danger of talking the United States into defeat in Iraq. And the results would be catastrophic."

Meanwhile, Here At Home

The 9/11 Commission spent this week in New York blaming everyone but the terrorists for the deaths of our fellow citizens on September 11th. But while they point fingers, our enemies appear to be planning to hit us again - soon. Local T.V. here in D.C. reported this morning that there have been seven instances of suspicious surveillance taking place on the D.C. - NY rail transit tracks in the last two weeks. The Philadelphia ABC affiliate is reporting this morning similar surveillance incidents between Philly and Trenton and New York. In addition, authorities last week found a hidden wireless transmitter on the tracks near Philadelphia. There are suspicions it was going to be used to detonate a bomb. The 92,000-gallon tanker truck hijacked in New Jersey weeks ago is still missing. Our defenses are being probed, but that isn't nearly as newsworthy as another round of bashing our military and their leadership.

The FBI just disseminated to 18,000 law enforcement agencies an intelligence bulletin to be on the lookout for suicide bombers. Ho Hum. Move on folks, nothing to see here. Just stay focused on our own mistakes and forget about the enemy who is working so hard to bring us another September 11th.

Consensus On Something

Finally! A new Gallup Poll out today shows that Republicans and Democrats do agree on one thing - U.S. moral values are in shambles. Four in five Republicans and Democrats say that moral values in our country are "only fair" or "poor." Only one in five Americans has a positive view of our morality.

We are pessimistic about the future too. Only 16% of us think our moral values will improve while 77% say they will continue to worsen. Even three out of four 18 to 29-year olds agree!

In recent weeks commentators have reported that strong majorities believe our country is headed in the wrong direction. Inevitably the analysis explains the figures by attributing it to economic concerns. But I believe Gallup found the right answer - we are worried about our hearts and souls much more than we are worried about our IRAs!
