Q: Could you please recommend a Study Bible for a growing believer? Thank you!
Editors Note: We've had many inquiries about what Bible versions are best to learn from. Today we have every means available to us through Internet and other sources to check Bible versions against the original Greek and Hebrew manuscripts. But realize that paraphrases like Eugene Peterson's the Message are not Literal Bible Versions, they are only the opinions of authors who have added or taken away from the Words of God and represented their own bias that must be tested against Scripture as Scripture commands us to do. The Apostle Paul said those in Berea were more noble minded than those in Thessalonica because they not only received the Word readily but searched everything Paul taught them against Scripture daily. We too need to be as noble as the Bereans (Acts 17:11) when it comes to checking the teachings of differing Bible versions.
A: Thanks for asking for my recommendations for a Study Bible: it's only because you've asked as a new believer that I give my following suggestion of a Study Bible as I believe the Bible alone is quite a sufficient Teacher and can obviously be a perfect guide within itself as one searches through the whole counsel of it by using its own cross references.
But this particular Study Bible has helped me grow in faith as the author is well versed in the Word of God and deeply rooted in its precepts. I have witnessed its applications in his life and that of his family who I've known personally as friends for many, many years.
I hope this study guide is a precious support to you for years to come as the Lord's grows you up into maturity in His Wisdom and Grace. What I appreciate about this Study Bible is its brilliant teaching on Creationism which should be the sound basis of our Biblical Faith. If this foundation is shaken or undermined sadly the whole Bible is weakened, lacks credibility and causes one's own faith to stumble through many misconceptions.
Dr. Morris gives tools for an in depth studying of the Bible as he presents eye-opening aspects to some controversial doctrines which he is not afraid to confront such as his literal approach on Genesis which forms building blocks for a strong faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as our God of Creation. Dr. Morris helps the reader to be able to better defend and contend for our Christian Faith through a firm understanding of our God of Creation and redemption.
For many years I've been blessed personally by the insights of The New Defender's Study Bible: Understanding the Critical Issues of The Faith from a Literal Creationist Viewpoint by Dr. Henry M. Morris (Founder of the Institute of Creation Research Inst in 1970)
It has notes alongside Scripture defending the accuracy and integrity of the Scriptures, assuming complete and verbal inspiration, inerrancy in all matters of fact and faith, and literal interpretation as intended by the writers. This Study Guide uses the King James Version and is published by World Publishing. Inc. Nashville, TN 37214.
Dr. Henry M Morris has been involved in the study and defense of the Christian faith for over 60 years and passed away in 2006. To learn more about Dr. Morris you can check here: http://www.icr.org/article/legacy-henry-morris/
